High Plateau Lagoons

High Plateau Lagoons

"The inca, they say, is being searched and chased all the way to here, Chile. That's why he ran from hill to hill, in the search of a better place to build his palace. He found it in Chilique, because there was algarrobo and chañar wood. When the walker comes near the lagoon, he finds an enchanted orange tree, they say that the one who arrives on the night when the orange tree blossoms, he can pick up the fruit the next day, turned into golden oranges."

We'll admire lagoons of an intense turquoise blue, born less than a million years ago by the eruption of the Meñiques Volcano. Through the years, these lagoons have recieved water from the infiltration of the rain water and the defrost of the high peaks.

Located at the slope of the Miscanti Volcano, Miscanti Lagoon has a surface of 15 km2, at 4,200 masl, its neighboor Meñiques Lagoon is located 5 meters lower, with a surface of 1.5 km2. These lagoons are part of the Flamingo's National Reserve and were witnesses of the first human settlements of the zone: about 4,000 to 3,000 B.C., what can be seen in the circle shaped constructions, made of stones, that worked as pens and sheepherding areas. This scenario is also prosperous for a wide variety of flora and fauna, specialy birds like the wari or the horned tagua.
